Fixing nail holes or defects in spindles

I use a lot of reject lumber to make things like tool handles and other spindle turnings. These often have bug holes and nail holes that would weaken or ruin the project.

One method I came up with to solve this problem is to insert brass rod into the hole. I use 3/32 brass brazing rod. You can get this at any welding shop. The first thing I do is drill through the hole with a 3/32 drill bit.

Now I insert the brass rod. I put medium CA glue or epoxy into the hole and put a little on the brass rod. Then I drive it through the hole.

When the glue has dried I cut it off and file it down. You can now turn it to shape or if you like just sand it down. You need to sand it to at least 600 grit. This looks great and adds strength to the project.

Here’s the finished tool handle. You could turn away or sand the stain from the rusting nail but I thought it added character.
