I retired from the University of Pittsburgh as an Associate Professor of Dentistry in 1992.

After taking a weekend introductory course in Woodturning in 1995, I decided to pursue the craft as an avocation. I have taken many other courses in Woodturning with some of the leaders in Woodturning at both Arrowmont School of the Arts and John C. Campbell Folk School.

I have been turning wood for the past 10 years and because of the creativity involved it has developed into a passion. It is exciting to turn an ordinary looking piece of wood on a wood lathe and find a treasure inside.

I like to explore working with many types of unusual and beautiful timbers and see where the wood leads me. My preference is to make “one of a kind” creations using whatever decorative methods are available to me. Each piece of wood I work with offers a unique challenge.

Recently, I learned how to make Polychromatic Vases and Bowls and this experience opened a whole new world of woodturning to explore. The creativity is endless and each new work is a challenge unto itself.

And too, a short while ago I also learned to construct Stacked Laminated Bowls which has led me to a completely different avenue of creative woodturning. Even at 74 years of age there is always something new to learn.

There are so many facets to woodturning I will never be able to find an end to it all and that is the excitement that it offers.

Life is nifty after fifty!
